Ursula is the main antagonist of the 1989 Disney animated film The Little Mermaid. She is Ariel, Eric and Triton's arch-nemesis and is loosely based upon the sea witch in the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale of the same name.

    Why She's Ursula

    1. Ursula (along the other characters of the film), kicked off the Disney Renaissance with various awesome films and characters.
    2. Ursula is one of the favorite Disney villains precisely because of how confidence, flamboyance and theatrics she is.
    3. Ursula belongs to a race of creatures known as Cecaelia, which are half-woman, half-octopus.
    4. Ursula is a very dark and wicked villain. Despite this, she has what would be considered a great sense of humor.
    5. Ursula is very manipulative who strikes deals with unfortunate merfolk with the promise of making their dreams come true.
    6. Unlike many Disney villains, Ursula puts her henchman Flotsam and Jetsam before anything and everyone else.
      • Ursula genuinely loves Flotsam and Jetsam and treats them well; despite barking orders at them during their tasks. She even praised them for completing their tasks at hand, as well as showing extreme remorse for killing them by accident.
    7. Her song "Poor Unfortunate Souls" is a fun and memorable villain song.
    8. The late Pat Carroll gives a great performance as Ursula, who takes her to levels of crazy madness. She was clearly having a time of her life in this role.
      • Melissa McCarthy also does a great job portraying Ursula in the 2023 remake, and she is clearly having fun with the role.
    9. She was able to trick Ariel into giving up her voice and turning her into human. Ursula laughs maniacally as she turns Ariel into a human after gaining her voice, and she allows Sebastian and Flounder to take Ariel to the surface.
    10. Ursula reveals her true goal and forces Triton to choose between his freedom and his daughter's. Triton agrees to take Ariel's place, and once Triton is transformed into a polyp, Ursula takes his crown and trident.
    11. Once she gets the trident, Ursula declares herself the Queen of the Seven Seas, but before she can use the trident, Eric intervenes with a harpoon. Ursula attempts to kill Eric, but Ariel intervenes, causing Ursula to inadvertently kill Flotsam and Jetsam.
    12. Ursula is able to grow into a giant enemy monster version of herself at the film's climax using the trident's magic. With her new form, Ursula declares herself as ruler of the entire ocean and creates a powerful storm.
    13. She comes incredibly close to succeeding at the end of the film, as she managed to get control over the entire ocean, and attempted to kill Ariel. She gets defeated by Prince Eric, who uses the ship to take her down and saving everyone from her clutches.

    Bad Qualities

    1. She inflicts on the merfolks souls who fail to meet the nigh-impossible terms of her contracts; turning them into miserable little polyps doomed to forever writhe helplessly in her personal garden.
    2. She foils Ariel's attempt to kiss Eric, and transforms herself into a beautiful human woman named Vanessa to seduce and hypnotize Eric.
    3. Her boss fights in the first Kingdom Hearts is extremely difficult, especially when you're fighting her in giant-sized.
    4. She was badly flanderized in the Ariel series.

    • Ursula is the only female villain to come from the Disney Renaissance.
    • With Ursula's brief stint as Vanessa, she is one of the few villains to share a voice actress (Jodi Benson) with the film's heroine.
    • Ursula's design is based on the late drag queen Divine.
    • Despite being half-octopus, Ursula only has six tentacles. However, if her arms are counted as limbs as well, then she actually does have eight limbs altogether.
