Tom Wachowski, also known as the Donut Lord, is one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Tails) of Paramount Pictures' Sonic the Hedgehog film series.
He is a police officer who becomes friends with Sonic. Eventually, he later becomes Sonic's adoptive father. He later adopts Tails and Knuckles the Echidna. He is an original character created exclusively for the movie franchise.
Donut Lord Qualities
- He has great chemistry with Sonic, as they both execute a funny and heartwarming take on the bromance dynamic.
- After meeting Sonic and shooting him with his tranquilizer dart, Tom finds himself having to take responsibility for what he did and saved him from Dr. Robotnik.
- While he soon tried to cut ties with him, he admitted that it was his fault that Sonic was stranded on Earth without his Portal Rings, leading him to help Sonic and forming a close bond during their travels.
- From that moment on, Tom became increasingly caring towards Sonic, to the point of even acting as a parental figure to him, as shown when he tucked the hedgehog into bed at a motel and when he hurriedly sought help for him when he was knocked unconscious after an encounter with some Badniks.
- He helped Sonic realize his importance as a hero to the citizens he has worked with for years. Eventually, after helping Sonic defeat Dr. Robotnik, he was convinced to stay in Green Hills, where he took Sonic in as a part of the Wachowski family.
- He is a faithful and loving husband to his wife, Maddie. They have a very trusting relationship and like joking and being sarcastic with each other.
- He is physically strong and has quick reflexes as he was able to knock Dr. Robotnik out with one punch and later evaded fire from one of Robotnik's Badnik drones. He was also able to hold his own in a bar fight that Sonic started.
- He is a responsible, dedicated and moral man who works dutifully as the sheriff of Green Hills and is caring towards his friends like Wade.
- He also has a sense of humor and possesses some quirks, such as talking to donuts when he thinks nobody is around. It's the very reason why Sonic calls him "Donut Lord".
- He is quite intelligent and resourceful, as he was able to utilize Sonic's Portal Rings, despite never using them before in his life. This allowed him to sneak up on Dr. Robotnik and flank him from behind, getting a few good hits before the doctor managed to throw him off.
- In the second movie, he gives Sonic a somewhat parental-sounding scolding at the start of the second movie, after Sonic spends all night fighting crime in Seattle and destroys part of it in the process.
- He shares a moment with Maddie as they save Sonic from getting crushed by Robotnik's giant robot by mere milliseconds.
- He contributes the best he can, considering he's in a universe that also includes evil scientists and superpowered hedgehogs, foxes, and echidnas.
- James Marsden gives a wonderful performance playing as Tom.
Jerk Lord Qualities
- He accidentally sets the whole plot of the first movie in motion by shooting Sonic with a tranquilizer dart, making him lose his Power Rings, necessitating the road trip from Green Hills, Montana to San Francisco, California.
- He has a "shoot first, ask questions later" mentality in the first movie, and he gets himself into deeper and deeper trouble because of his tendency to act before he thinks.
- At the start of the movie, he's not pleased that he has to accompany Sonic on his quest to retrieve his rings, but he softens up considerably thanks to character development.
Trivia
- He shares many similarities with Fred O'Hare, a character from Illimination's 2011 Hop:
- Both Hop and Sonic the Hedgehog involve an animated character ends up in a big city and finds a random guy to live with and silly antics ensue.
- Ironically enough, James Marsden, who plays Tom Wachowski, starred in this film as Fred O'Hare. Both movies have an animated anthropologic character meeting a live-action human (Fred O'Hare meets E.B. and Tom Wachowski meets Sonic the Hedgehog, respectively).
- Ironically enough, both movies have the live-action human driving the anthropomorphic protagonist in their car.
- Tom is a police officer, just like James Marsden's other character, Hitch Trailblazer.
