    The Grinch (2000s version)

    Mr. Grinch
"I'm all... toasty inside... and I'm leaking. Oh, Max... I LOVE YA!!"
    Gender: Male
    Type: Hilarious yet Sympathetic Trickster
    Species: Who
    Portrayed by: Jim Carrey
    Status: Alive
Media of origin: How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

The Grinch is the titular villain protagonist of the 2000 How the Grinch Stole Christmas movie.

He lives in a snowy mountain, is exiled from Whoville, has a loyal pet on his side named Max and now he is given a more extravagant lair while going against the commercialism and materialism being plastered everywhere in Whoville. He is also the archnemesis of Mayor Augustus Maywho, his childhood rival and bully who was responsible for the way Grinch became as a adult, growing up to become a killjoy who enjoys scaring the Whos with a machine to keep everyone away from his mountain.

    Why He Is THE GRINCH!

    1. Even though he is a more comedic version of The Grinch, he is just as iconic as his animated counterpart, as well as being very funny and expressive as a "eccentric grump" that you love to hate. As the film shows him to be an entertaining, whimsical, comical, and insane person with scheming qualities, providing scenes that nobody can forget. Which is at least much better than The Cat from the infamous 2000s Cat in the Hat film
    2. Most importantly, he provided the memorable and iconic "sadistic evil smile" at the beginning of the film, which was so hilarious that it became a absolute internet meme.
    3. He may be energetic, mischievous, immature, over-the-top hammy and a bit of a wise guy, but the fact he goes on an rampage with a tirade on the commercialism and materialism of the Whos when Augustus pulls that cruel joke on him, just shows he isn't afraid to call out the Whos on their selfish behavior in his famous "Why Christmas Sucks" speech once Augustus announces a "brand new car" like a self-promoting overconfident egotist does, which also shows how The Grinch can stand up for himself while expressing his complaints for the Whos' self-indulgent style of celebrating Christmas.
    4. While he is mostly childish, goofy, and flamboyant, he is not without an understandable motive for the way he is, where he has a pretty sympathetic backstory for his hatred against the Whos since they mocked him as a kid on Christmas and made fun of him while laughing at him in a mean-spirited way just for The Grinch trying to shave his face, this makes you somewhat easily root for him, especially with the rivalry Augustus made The Grinch grow amniosity for and was also responsible for how The Grinch become the way he is today.
      • While Mr. Grinch can be a smart aleck who comes up with some laughable and absurd ideas, yet he does have reasonable solutions to problems that can actually work. Sure they seem quirky and weird at first glance, but it's rather unique in a humorous and relatable way like the way he makes a schedule for himself to cope with his life as a outcast and trying on clothes to look good without coming off as completely tacky or unfashionable.
    5. His character design (despite being a little uncanny and strange) is great.
    6. Despite all of his villainous actions and his true hatred towards the Whos, he has a caring side to Max. Which shows at times when he lets Max ride in the sleigh with him while stealing the presents and when his heart grew three sizes, he expresses his genuine love and care for Max, showing his genuine levels of sympathy.
    7. Jim Carrey did a brilliant job at portraying him in a cartoonish fashion and he was able to make the Grinch incredibly expressive and full of emotion in his facial expressions, making him lively and animated. His infamous smile toward the camera became a memorable meme on the internet and this was also the inspiration for Robbie Rotten (who is also an eccentric "villain" with a hilarious personality and sympathetic qualities).
    8. He also has many great, memorable, hilarious and quotable lines:
      • “Well done, Max! Serves them right, those Yuletide-loving sickly-sweet, nog-sucking cheer mongers. I REALLY don't like them. Mmm mmm, No, I don't... Max! Get my cloak! I've been much too tolerant of these Whovenile delinquents... and their innocent, victimless pranks. So, they want to get to know me, do they? They want to spend a little "quality time with the Grinch"... I guess I could use a little... social interaction.”
      • “The, the, the... THE GRINCH! ... Well, that worked out nicely.”
      • “Bleeding hearts of the WORLD UNITE!!”
      • “Give me that! Don’t you know you’re not supposed to take things that don’t belong to you? What’s the matter with you? You some kind of wild animal? HUH?! (To Max): Let's go.”
      • “Saving you? Is that what you think I was doing? ... Wrong-o. I just noticed that you were improperly packaged, my dear. Hold still! (to Max): Max, pick out a bow! (to Cindy Lou): Can I use your finger for just a second?”
      • “Get the stick Max! Get the stick! (chuckling to himself) There's no stick. I'm smarter.”
      • “If you utter so much as one syllable, I'LL HUNT YOU DOWN AND GUT YOU LIKE A FISH! If you'd like to fax me, press the star key.”
      • “It's because I'm green, isn't it?”
      • “Am I just eating because I'm bored?”
      • “Tomorrow is Christmas. It’s practically here! MAX!! Fetch me my sedative!!! This'll get rid of those PESKY memories... AH Uggghhh!”
      • “That is not a chew toy! Stop it max!! You have NO idea where it's BEEN!”
      • “BLASTIC this Christmas music! It's joyful and triumphant... Got to BLAST IT OUT!!! PLay monkey!! PLAY!! Play play!!!”
      • “It's not a dress it's a KILT! Ssicko!!”
      • “This doesn't fit like it used to...”
      • “Stupid. Ugly. Out of date. This is ridiculous. If I can't find something nice to wear I'M NOT GOING!”
      • “That's it I'm not going.”
      • “What is that stench? It's fantastic.”
      • “Kids today. So desensitized by movies and television.... WHAT DO YOU WANT?!?!”
      • “That's what it's all about, isn't it? That's what it's always been about! Gifts, gifts... gifts, gifts, gifts, gifts, gifts! You wanna know what happens to your gifts? They all come to me. In your garbage. You see what I'm saying? In your garbage! I could hang myself with all the bad Christmas neckties I found at the dump. And the avarice. The avarice never ends! 'I want golf clubs. I want diamonds. I want a pony so I can ride it twice, get bored and sell it to make glue!' Look, I don't wanna make waves, but this whole Christmas season is stupid stupid stupid!”
      • “Hate, hate, hate. Hate, hate, hate. Double hate. LOATHE entirely!”
      • “I tell you Max, I don't know why I ever leave this place. I've got all the company I need right here.”
      • “Uh-oh! Somebody's fabulous!”
      • “Oh, the Who-manity!”
      • “Nice kid. Bad judge of character.”
      • “Clearance sale. Everything must, GO.”
      • “Cheer up, dude. It's Christmas.”
      • “Even if I wanted to go, my SCHEDULE wouldn't allow it! 4:00, wallow in self pity; 4:30, stare into the abyss; 5:00, solve world hunger, tell no one; 5:30, jazzercize; 6:30, dinner with me - I can't cancel that again; 7:00, wrestle with my self-loathing... I'm booked. Of course, if I bump the loathing to 9:00, I could still be done in time to lay in bed, stare at the ceiling and slip slowly into madness. But WHAT would I WEAR?!”
      • “This doesn't fit like it used to.”
      • “This is more of a spring look. Owowowo!”
      • “Alright! I'll swing by for a minute, allow them to envy me, grab a handful of popcorn shrimp and blow out of there... But if it's a cruel prank? What if it's a cash bar??? How DARE they... Alright I'll go, but I'll be fashionably late, no, yes no yes. No! Yes! DERGH!!! (Inhales) Definitely NOT. ALRIGHT I've made my decision! I'm GOING! And THAT'S that!! Ah, had my fingers crossed.”
      • “Ow. Air-bag's a little slow. BUT THAT'S WHAT THESE TESTS ARE FOR!”
      • “All right, you're a reindeer. Here's your motivation: Your name is Rudolph, you're a freak with a red nose, and no one likes you. Then, one day, Santa picks you and you save Christmas. No, forget that part. We'll improvise... just keep it kind of loosey-goosey. You HATE Christmas! You're gonna STEAL it! Saving Christmas is a lousy ending, way too commercial... ACTION!”
      • “BRILLIANT! You reject your own nose because it represents the GLITTER of commercialism. Why didn't I think of that? Cut, print, check the gate, moving on.”
      • “VENGEANCE! Er, I mean.. presents. I suppose.”
      • “Are you kidding? The sun is bright and the powder's bitchin'! Now scoot over, it's my turn to drive!”
      • “No hard feelings. (laughs) Cheer up, dude, it's Christmas.”
      • “Blasted water weight! Goes rrrright to my hips.”
      • “Sssh!! A little more stealth please. (Where the little Who stockings all hung in a row) These stockings... (He grinned) Are the first thing to do. Okay, fellas. Chow time.”
      • “What are YOU laughing at? ... Rrrrudolph?? It's all you, Maxie!”
      • “We! DID IIIIIIIT!!!!
      • “(Panting heavily after screaming for his life) Almost lost my cool there.”
      • Yeah! There's nothing like the holidays. Who wants the gizzard? Too late! That'll be mine...”

    Intentional Grinched Qualities

    1. His heavily comedic personality can make him come across as very out of place from the original. Though, to be fair, the original Grinch DID have some sense of humor, but it was very few and far in between.
      • Due to Jim Carrey's Grinch being loud and eccentric, The Grinch has bad social skills as seen towards Cindy Lou Who before Grinch grew a heart, which leads him into some antics and/or awkward moments.
    2. Even though The Grinch's make-up and costume are fantastically done, his face looks more like a dog than the original design, especially the nose.
    3. Many of the Grinch's facial expressions can range from stupid, ugly, and weird to insanely terrifying, and while it's understandable, they could potentially scare sensible children and pushes the horror elements of the film a lot more.
      • Jim Carrey claimed that making facial expressions as the main character felt like pain, mainly due to how much makeup he had to put on. According to Carrey, the yellow contact lenses were so uncomfortable that he couldn't wear them during filming, and some shots of his eyes are colored in post-production.
    4. He goes to Mayor Maywho's room and used Max to make the Mayor kiss Max's butt shoved onto the Mayor's lips, causing Max to whimper while rubbing his butt on the floor out of pain.

    • Before Jim Carrey was cast to play the Grinch, Jack Nicholson, Eddie Murphy, Dustin Hoffman, Tom Hanks, Tim Curry, and the late Robin Williams were briefly considered.
    • Jim Carrey's Grinch suit was covered in yak hair, which was dyed green, and sewn onto a spandex suit.
