Steven Anita "Steve" Smith (born May 13, 1992) is a fictional character in the animated television series American Dad!, voiced by Scott Grimes. He is Stan and Francine Smith's 14-year-old son and Hayley's younger brother as well as the youngest of the series' six main characters.
Steve only has 3 human geeky friends that always stand by his side no matter what crazy scenario is going on. However, he has the strongest friendship with the family alien Roger, as they frequently go on wild adventures together. Steve was born on May 13.
Steve's original design was much geekier and gawky and he was voiced by Ricky Blitt. Halfway through production, Grimes replaced Blitt and Steve's design was made to be more attractive, so he would be less comparable to Neil Goldman from Family Guy.
Why He Rocks
- Adressing the Elephant in the Room: His singing voice. Scott Grimes deserves credit for giving Steve an amazing singing voice, most notably in songs such as "Bad Bad Boy", "Daddy's Gone", and "Is She Not Hot Enough?"
- Steve is a precocious high-schooler who is determined to get some action with the ladies and geek his nerdy heart out and it is miles better than making him be written as a cliched/geeky nerd, similar to Neil Goldman from Family Guy.
- He has a great friendship with Roger, which is one of the best part of the series and is a fan favorite trait. They are both American Dad!'s most popular characters thanks to their fantastic chemistry. This is most iconic with "Wheels and the Legman", where the two manage to be a great duo.
- Despite being wimpy for the most part, he has shown to be a bad-ass on some occasions, most notably in the show's 200th episode.
- He manages to be great friends with Snot, Barry and Toshi and also has great chemistry with them.
- Much like most characters on American Dad!, he has a great design.
- Scott Grimes does a memorable and fantastic job voicing him.
- When the show saw a decline between seasons 11-13, he, alongside Hayley, Jeff and Klaus, remained the most likable characters in the Smith family.
Bad Qualities
- He can be a huge butt-monkey at times since he is always bullied by the kids at school and was even bullied by his own father.
- His original design and voice acting before they changed everything for the better, looked awful and Ricky Blitt did a mediocre job voicing him.
- He has a tendency to be unlikable himself. Likewise, his voice has a tendency to be irritating to listen to and he manages to act bratty himself.
- Like most of his family members, Steve suffered a character derailment in season 6 onwards, as he was flanderized into a spoiled, selfish, arrogant, and lustful brat.
