"Hear me, Krabs! When I discover your formula for Krabby Patties, I'll run you out of business! I WENT TO COLLEGE!"
    Gender: Male
    Type: Tiny Comedic Villain
    Age: 80
    Species: Planktonic copepod
    Portrayed by: Doug Lawrence
    Status: Alive
    Media of origin: SpongeBob SquarePants

Sheldon J. Plankton, commonly known as Plankton, is one of the main antagonists in the hit Nickelodeon animated series SpongeBob SquarePants. He used to be best friends with his arch-rival Mr. Krabs until the incident where they accidentally killed Old Man Jenkins with their experimental burger. Since then, he got married to Karen and both founded and owns the unsuccessful Chum Bucket, which is set right next to The Krusty Krab, where he would always try to steal back the Krabby Patty secret formula. He is voiced by Doug Lawrence.

Why He Deserves to Have the Krabby Patty Secret Formula

    1. He is one of the funniest Nicktoon villains ever created, just like another great villain that isn't from Nickelodeon.
    2. Plankton's dialogue with Karen is usually hilarious and witty, and he should married to that computer in the first place.
    3. His marriage to Karen has also been the focus of many great episodes, like "Single Cell Anniversary", "Karen's Virus", "Walking the Plankton", and "Lockdown for Love".
    4. Unlike Mr. Krabs, all that Plankton wants is to have his own restaurant that cares for his own customers, even if he tries to steal Mr. Krabs's secret formula. Although on some occasions, he wants to rule the world, considering that he embraces evil from all the rivalry.
    5. His comical defeats such as being stepped on like a bug or being launched back to the Chum Bucket, are always very entertaining to watch and very iconic in the fact Plankton is treated like a insect for how incredibly tiny he is.
    6. Plankton's minuscule appearance coupled with his 'Napoleon complex' traits, makes for some recurring hilarious slapstick visual gags, such as being stomped by people like a bug.
    7. Plankton is very experienced and talented with his knowledge in science and technology, which allows him to become a amazing scientist, inventor and engineer who can invent and create many inventions and gadgets, two examples include the Chum Bucket helmets that allowed him to control the minds of everyone in Bikini Bottom in the first movie, him building a giant machine of himself (as well as many war planes and tank machines that come with the fighting machine he uses to terrorize the Krusty Krabs) in SpongeBob: Out of Water and several episodes in the show like his robotic imitation of Krabs in the "Imitation Krabs" episode.
    8. In the episode "F.U.N.", he and SpongeBob got along well as well as in the Sponge Out of Water movie.
    9. Plankton acts as the supportive deuteragonist of SpongeBob: Out of Water, which is showing that he wants to help and does not care too much about his single-minded goal over other his friends.
    10. When his restaurant goes into business, he doesn't only care about money and fame, he genuinely cares about the customers at his restaurant, unlike his arch-enemy Mr. Krabs' obsession with money and fame (especially money).
    11. He was arguably at his best in "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie", where he slowly became a genuine threat to be reckoned upon despite having his fair share of humorous and pathetic moments, which makes him a fun villain to see his "sinister" side and his "comedic" side done with good pacing and timing.
    12. Even outside his having intimidating moments in the first movie (where he successfully takes over Bikini Bottom), he also has his menacing moments in the show as a villain, such as his debut appearance with him taking control of SpongeBob's body to force him in revealing the Krabby Patty's ingredients (which he nearly succeeds at before Plankton's patty obsession got the better of him in a comical manner), him getting his entire family of Planktons to attack and terrorize Krabs at the Krusty Krab with full force and tying up Mr. Krabs, which also nearly has Plankton succeed in getting the formula before Krabs tricked him in "Plankton's Army", and the second movie when he creates a giant machine of himself that turns into a war plane, tank and giant robot who terrorized the Krusty Krab and nearly succeeded in attacking Krabs to take the formula for himself. Making him a villain with credible and awesome moments despite having several arrogant and incompetent moments played for laughs.
    13. He had also shown to have good chemistry with Sandy in the episode "Perfect Chemistry", making them friendly scientists who are intelligent and smart enough to collab and work together very well on occasion.
    14. When the show declined between seasons 6-8, he and Squidward were the most likable and least flanderized of the main cast.
    15. Plankton can be a good father at times. He was courageous when attempting to save his son Chip II.
    16. Although he embraces being evil and selfish, he does possess much better personality traits than Mr. Krabs does. He values the well-being of those he befriends or is in relationships with, such as his wife Karen, his former pet Spot, and even SpongeBob himself of all people. He is even willing to help SpongeBob and his friends genuinely when not having a hidden agenda with stealing the formula.
    17. He often has quite a snarky attitude and his sarcastic remarks can be really funny.
    18. His first name, Sheldon, can be hilarious, as seen in "Plankton's Army".
    19. His screams, provided by Mr. Lawrence, are hilarious to hear.
    20. While all of his constant failures, setbacks, and misadventures are all played for comedy; it also raises a ton of sympathy since it's sometimes done in a way for us to sympathize with Plankton for how incredibly luckless and ineffectual he generally is.
    21. He provided memorable dialogue and quotable one-liners that include:
      • "I' went to college!"
      • "You'll pay for this, Krabs!"
      • "Not if I shift to maximum overdrive! HiYAH!!!"
      • "I knew I should've added the turbo."
      • "Arggh! It's not worth it! (calmly) Goodbye everyone, I'll remember you all in therapy."
      • "You'll never get what you want if you let people step all over you."
      • " Oh come on kid, you asked that already. Now quit wasting my time!"
      • "I'm Plankton, you old hag! And your son smells like boogers!"
      • "I think it's time for you to lose some weight fatty. That's what it is!"
      • "Someone should put you on a box, floating down the river, GRANDMA!!"
      • "You people are crazy! I'm getting out of here!"
      • (Customer: "You think this is funny?) In a cosmic sort of way, yes. (Customer: "Well Mr. Funny man, is this how you get your sick kicks!?) What? It's just an ordinary Krabby- OH MY GOODNESS! SQUIDWARD!!!
      • "Enjoy while it lasts, Mr. Krabs. Soon enough, I'll have the formula, then everyone will eat at the Chum Bucket, AND I, WILL RULE THE WORLD!"

    Bad Qualities

    1. As said above, he is often mean-spirited and obnoxious towards the kindness of others. Again, because he is evil, he's supposed to be that way.
      • In "Someone's in the Kitchen With Sandy", he steals Sandy’s fur pelt to disguise himself as her, causing the latter to get ridiculed for roaming through town in the nude. As a result, Sandy got arrested for indecent exposure, while Plankton got off scot-free, aside from getting beaten up by Sandy who then trapped him in a mustard jar stinging his eye.
      • In "Welcome to the Chum Bucket", he neglects SpongeBob's feelings and fails to show him compassion and understanding so he can make a Krabby Patty, meaning he's not only mean-spirited, he also lacking in patience and empathy.
      • In "Karen 2.0", he heartlessly shuts off Karen's brain, who has been nothing but a good wife to Plankton, to be replaced by Karen 2 and trashing her, essentially killing Karen or at least, putting her permanently to sleep.
      • In "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water", he blamed SpongeBob for taking the wrong secret formula bottle, even though it's technically his fault for not reminding SpongeBob that he was about to swap the formulas in the past.
      • In “Karen’s Baby”, just because he was unwilling to raise a child, he tried to get rid of his computer son, Chip, convincing him to run away from home.
    2. His obsession with stealing the secret formula from Krabs often leads to a strained relationship with his wife, Karen, who usually tolerates his repetitive ambitions.
      • Much like Wile E. Coyote, he can be predictably incompetent when he typically fails at his single-minded schemes to top over against The Krusty Krab, along with the constant running gag of Plankton failing each time, does get a bit stale towards viewers.
    3. His short temper, aggression, and wrathful tendencies often lead to Karen's frustration and get in the way of his ambitions.
    4. He can be childish and whiny at times.
    5. Despite being a power-hungry and ambitious villain, he has shown to be cynical and pessimistic sometimes.
      • Similar to Quacker, he almost killed himself in the infamous season 7 episode "One Coarse Meal" because of his fear of whales and all because of Mr. Krabs maliciously makes him incredibly depressed, paranoid, and fatalistic by torturing Plankton with his fears of whales. Thankfully, he overcame his fear of whales in later episodes like "Patnocchio" for example.
    6. Although he wasn’t too much in decline in character during Seasons 6-8, he became a bigger punching bag like Squidward where bad things happen to him even when he doesn’t do anything wrong. He also became a less effective villain to the point where he’s more likable than his nemesis.
      • Not to mention that even after seasons 6 to 9a, he too can still have bad episodes that focus on him suffering in a miserable state of mind, much to the point you can sometimes pitifully sympathize with him.
        • In "Plankton's Regular", when he finally gets a customer who likes his chum and is happy about his achievements, he is yet pointlessly suffering and completely miserable because of Krabs and SpongeBob themselves (the former out of petty jealousy and the latter naively thinking that he was making another 'villainous' plan of his).

    • As shown in "Friend or Foe", Plankton is the same age as Mr. Krabs.
    • Originally, Plankton (and Karen) were recurring antagonists in the pre-movie era. Plankton's voice actor, Mr. Lawrence, explained that Plankton "was only supposed to be in one or two episodes, but I was a writer on the show and I really liked this character". The credits of the 2004 movie were the first time that the SpongeBob franchise ever billed a "Main Cast" in its credits. Both Plankton and Karen were both officially promoted to main characters in the film's credits.
