Sebastian is a major character in Disney's 1989 animated film The Little Mermaid. He is a red Jamaican crab who serves as King Triton's advisor and the royal court composer. Sebastian is regularly tasked to watch over Triton's youngest daughter Ariel and later her daughter Melody. He is voiced by the late Samuel E. Wright.
Why He Lives Under the Sea
- He, along with Scuttle the seagull, is one of the most memorable comic relief characters in The Little Mermaid franchise.
- Like Flounder, Sebastian is a very great companion towards Ariel.
- He has two songs, "Under the Sea" and "Kiss the Girl", that are very catchy and are a couple of the best songs in the movie.
- He's a very helpful assistant to King Triton.
- His Jamaican accent is one of his best qualities and the late Samuel E. Wright does an amazing job voicing him.
- Though he can be very strict and stubborn, he is also shown to be very caring, such as how he warns Ariel not to trust Ursula.
- He has a few moments when he shows off his fighting skills, especially if the people he cares about are in danger.
- His rivalry with Chef Louis is fantastic and has perfect chemistry in the film.
- He even has an urban spin-off segment on Marsupilami, and it's the only good segment of the show.
- Sebastian has the most dynamic character growth in the original movie, becoming brave and selfless following Ariel's adventure.
Bad Qualities
- He tends to be a drama queen and self-centered dirty coward who just wants to write symphonies, and convince Ariel to act like "all the normal fish" so he doesn't get in trouble with her father.
- He unintentionally revealed the truth to Triton about Ariel's secret, which caused him to destroy Ariel's grotto, losing her trust in the process.
- His design in the 2023 film is horrendous, as he looks more like Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob SquarePants.
- Also, his voice in the remake, Daveed Digs, doesn't sound as good as Samuel E. Wright, as his Jamaican accent there is dull and forced.
Trivia
- Originally, Sebastian was to have an English and American accent.
- Sebastian made a small cameo in the 1992 Disney film Aladdin, where Genie searches for a recipe to make Aladdin a prince.
