Scarecrow is a secondary antagonist of the 2005 film Batman Begins. He was portrayed by Cillian Murphy.
Why He Rocks
- This iteration of Scarecrow is considered one of the best interpretations of the nightmare inducing Batman villain alongside the DCAU and Arkhamverse versions.
- Cillian Murphy did a fantastic job portraying Dr. Jonathan Crane. He would later reprise his role in the next two films of the Dark Knight Trilogy.
- He ties into the theme of fear effectively. It is later revealed that he is a supplier for the League of Shadows, making him an associate of Ra’s al Ghul.
- He had some memorable lines including “You look like a man who takes himself too seriously. You want my opinion? You need to lighten up.”, “Death… by exile”, “There is no Crane, only Scarecrow.” and “Dr. Crane isn’t here right now. But if you like to make an appointment…”
- His burlap sack mask is impressively made. His nightmare hallucination sequences are made with very little CGI.
- Batman was able to gas him with his own fear gas, resulting in Jonathan Crane seeing a demonic bat creature. This was a reference to Scarecrow’s very first appearance in the DCAU.
- Unlike most depictions of Scarecrow, he is more handsome and rugged.
Bad Qualities
- A lot of his moments are deeply disturbing for a PG-13 superhero movie, especially if he gasses people with fear gas.
- False advertising: Toys and previews portrayed him as the main antagonist of Begins but in actuality, he’s a secondary antagonist.
Trivia
- Cillian Murphy reprised his role in the Batman Begins video game.
