Sadness is the deuteragonist of the Disney/Pixar film Inside Out series. She represents Riley's sadness, but the other emotions often don't see her as helpful and refuse to let her take control of the console. For most of the film, it centers around Sadness trying to discover her purpose for Riley. She is voiced by Phyliss Smith.
Why She Rocks
- She is the one who prevented Riley from running away and got her to return home and confess how much she misses Minnesota to her parents, finally understanding her purpose in life.
- As Sadness read most of the books about the mind, she has lots of knowledge about Long-Term Memory, such as where to go in the maze, and that the Abstract Thought area is dangerous to enter.
- She has a nerdy but cute appearance.
- When Bing Bong became sad after his rocket was pushed into the Memory Dump, all Sadness had to do was converse with him and it cheered him up. This was her first step at realizing her role.
- After their return to Headquarters, Joy made Sadness take control of the problem, and she successfully removed the idea bulb from the console, something the other emotions couldn't do.
- Sadness has the unique ability to change the color of different memories, due to Riley missing her home in Minnesota.
- Sadness suggested that scaring Riley would be the solution to waking her up, while Joy wanted to wake her up by surprising her. Scaring Riley awake definitely worked.
- She and Joy share an amazing chemistry with each other.
- Phyliss Smith does a very good performance as Sadness.
The Only Sad Quality (pun intended)
- Despite making a promise to stop tainting Riley's memory orbs to turn them sad, she tries to continue doing so. In fact, this caused her to make Riley cry in front of the class on her first day of school, creating a Sad Core Memory (which Joy tried to dispose of).
