Rocket "Rocky" J. Squirrel, an optimistic flying squirrel, and his best friend Bullwinkle J. Moose, a dim-witted but good-natured moose. Both characters lived in the fictional town of Frostbite Falls, Minnesota, which was purportedly based on the real city of International Falls, Minnesota. The scheming villains in most episodes were the fiendish spies Boris Badenov (a pun on Boris Godunov) and Natasha Fatale (a pun on femme fatale), forever attempting to "catch Moose and Squirrel".

    Why They're the World's High-Flying Iconic Duo

    Overall

    1. They have wonderful chemistry with each other and make a perfect comedic iconic duo that is entirely loyal to each other.
      • Speaking of which, they have had a more complex relationship in the 2018 series.
    2. Their original voice actors June Foray and Bill Scott did a great job voicing them.
      • With that in mind, their later voices such as Tara Strong and Brad Norman for example are faithful to the original voice actors.
    3. They always shared a sense of optimism, persistence, and traditional ethics and moral standards.
    4. Their designs are great.
    5. They have a very catchy and iconic theme song.

    Rocky J. Squirrel

    1. Rocky's extensive use of his ability to fly, which was presented with, appropriate to his full name, a jet engine sound effect, which was done quite memorably.
      • Where he was trying to fly again in the 2000 movie after being stuck in reruns, he showed signs of determination and loyalty in the process.
    2. As the brains and straight man of the "moose and squirrel" duo, he often was shown as coming up with creative solutions to the various situations the duo found themselves in on their adventures. Especially where he is meant to be an upstanding, if slightly naive, all-American youth. Despite this, he is no less gullible toward Boris Badenov's and Natasha Fatale's disguises than Bullwinkle.
    3. He is often the voice of reason to Bullwinkle. Where he sometimes gets annoyed and frustrated with Bullwinkle's idiocy, but he still respects him and considers him as his pal as a sign of his notable optimism.

    Bullwinkle J. Moose

    1. A lot like Patrick Star, Pinky, and Billy, He is dumb, but he presented his idiocy in a hilarious manner. Especially where his dimwittedness can be both charming and fun to watch.
      • With this in mind, despite his general stupidity, he can have some moments of showing intelligence and he has shown that he was not always as clueless as he seems.[1]
    2. Despite his idiocy and foolery, he is so good-hearted and caring to the point that he makes up for his acts of stupidity by having a good heart and having honest intentions for his behavior or actions.
    3. His magic tricks from The Bullwinkle Show are always done lightheartedly and humorously so.
      • Speaking of his talents, in the 2000 movie, he was shown to be a whole lot more heroic than ever before when it comes to saving his friends despite his semi-oblivious & somewhat gullible nature. He also had awesome moments like defeating Fearless Leader and his minions goofily yet singlehandedly (albeit Karen Sympathy somewhat helping out and Rocky trapping the antagonists at the very end).
    4. He generally contributes to some of the funniest moments in the original shorts and the live-action movie, the latter especially.
    5. He is very loyal and trusting toward Rocky.

    Dim-Witted Qualities

    Overall

    1. After their series died out in 1964, they were always on reruns and became obscure until the 2000 feature film and were brought back on occasion such as the 2018 series.

    Rocky J. Squirrel

    1. He has been somewhat flanderized in at least two cases.
      • In the 2000 movie, he can be a bit whiny, uncharacteristically gloomy, and persnickety at times.
      • In the 2018 series, he had notably shown to lack some common sense compared to his original counterpart.

    Bullwinkle J. Moose

    1. He has some very cheesy quotes, especially where Bullwinkle sometimes makes some not-so-good, corny puns from time to time.
      • Likewise, his stupidity can be unfunny and even dreadful at times, with The Rocky and Bullwinkle Puppet Shorts being the biggest offender.
    2. His character design in The Rocky and Bullwinkle Puppet Shorts looks mediocre (if somewhat faithful to his design) and it can be considered frightening to minors.

    Trivia

    • The Rocky and Bullwinkle puppet shorts were quickly abandoned after its original airing since it garnered heavy controversy since the show was taken off the air since Bullwinkle himself had commanded 20,000 children to cause mischief. Where he'd first make self-deprecating and tongue-in-cheek jokes when reading letters at first, and then asking the audience to remove the knobs of their TV sets to tune in for next weeks show, which had over 20,000 reports of children complying with this command and causing a tidal wave of angry letters from parents as a "public menace".[2]
