"Don't be a Pigma, be a Peppyǃ" - Characters In-Depth, in Why Star Fox: Assault's Story is SUPERBǃ

Peppy Hare (Japanese: ペッピー・ヘア, Hepburn: Peppī Hea) is an anthropomorphic rabbit character from the Star Fox series of video games.

Why He Does a Barrel Roll

    1. Peppy Hare is a very experienced pilot who is known to give advice to the players and is generally helpful in the battlefield.
    2. His backstory is pretty sad, he was a member of the original Star Fox team consisting of James McCloud, himself, and Pigma Dengar, but when they are sent to Venom to uncover the mystery of the strange activity there, Pigma betrays them to Andross for a large sum of money and had both of them imprisoned, only Peppy just barely escaped captivity to tell Fox what happened to James. After some years, he assembles the Star Fox team, but despite his experience, he lets Fox be the leader while he serves as their guiding advisor.
    3. Many of his voice actors do a great job voicing Peppy Hare.
    4. Even when experienced players already know the ropes to not need his help, it still makes sense for Peppy to keep doing what he does, in-universe, since Fox McCloud was still learning how to be a better pilot and be a good leader and Star Fox 64 is where the team was recently assembled.
    5. Peppy shows himself to be an incredibly selfless character; he acts as a father-figure to Fox since Pigma's betrayal since he doesn't have any parents left in his life and encourages and praises him along the way, and even comforts him when he is in distress, and the only one who doesn't poke fun at Fox for having an obvious crush on Krystal.
    6. "Do a Barrel Rollǃ"
    7. He is also the disciplinarian to the team as well such as him scolding Slippy for his recklessness and sometimes the others when they get into trouble. It's also humorous when he rants and yells at them during Star Fox Zero: The Battle Begins short, even over small stuff.
    8. He is at his absolute best in Star Fox: Assault, he still guides the team despite not flying in his Arwing around very much, but he has the biggest highlights that doesn't stop him from shining bright:
      • When General Pepper is infected by the Aparoids and is defeated and about to meet an untimely demise, Peppy gets inside his Arwing and uses it to soften his fall, even though Pepper doesn't want it (since he could have been subjected to a fate worse than death), and he gets the Medical Corps to help treat his condition.
      • His heroic sacrifice during the climax, even though he survived in the end, is pretty emotional; when the Aparoid Homeworld projects a shield to deny them entry with nothing to break it, Peppy tells everyone how proud his is of the team and when the cutscene begins, Peppy is about to ram the Great Fox into the shield and makes it known that he is willing to do it even if it costs him his life. This actually gets an emotional reaction out of everyone, who objects to his action. Peppy successfully slams into the shields, which breaks it and tells everyone to get into the planet before it fixes itself, which forces the team to go on without him. Peppy and ROB 64 would use an escape pod to leave the Great Fox before it got destroyed.

    The Only Bad Quality

    1. In Star Fox Zero, in a mission where Peppy is playable, he constantly says "Barrel Roll" every time he does it, which can get pretty annoying after a while.

    Trivia

    • His "Do a Barrel Roll" quote has become so popular that it not only became a meme, but Google searching, "do a barrel roll" or "Z or R twice" will cause the screen to do a 350-degree flip.
