Miles "Tails" Prower is one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Tom) of Paramount Pictures' Sonic the Hedgehog film series.
|
He is an anthropomorphic alien fox with two distinct twin-tails, which allow him to fly. This ability, however, resulted in his alienation from the people of his village, believing himself to be an outsider.
After discovering Sonic the Hedgehog, however, Tails found a hero to look up to, whose own unique powers helped him to see his weirdness in a positive light. When later learning that Knuckles the Echidna was after Sonic, Tails tracked Sonic down to warn him.
In the process, he would join Sonic on his adventure to protect the Master Emerald from Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles, becoming close friends with Sonic along the way. After later defeating Dr. Robotnik, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles formed a new order to protect the Master Emerald from evil together. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Tails will meet Sonic's new enemy, Shadow the Hedgehog.
Why He's Still Super Fly
- He is a great incarnation of the original Tails and is also very faithful to Tails' game counterpart and his other counterparts.
- He shows up after the first movie's conflict is over, determined to find Sonic on Earth, foreshadowing his involvement in the sequel.
- Similar to his video game counterpart, Tails' main power is his ability to fly by rotating his two tails like a propeller. However, unlike his video game counterpart, Tails is never shown getting tired after flying for a set amount of time.
- Much like Sonic, Tails can move incredibly fast. He flies from the top of a cliff overlooking Green Hills into the town proper in just a few seconds, leaving an orange trail behind him.
- His entire friendship with Sonic is fun and heart warming. No matter the medium, these two are destined to find each other and become the best of friends.
- In fact, when Sonic is about to head to Siberia to search for the compass to the Master Emerald, he insists that Tails come with him and promises to have his back, even with Tails' hesitancy and mentioning that he's "not a field guy". He clearly saw something in the young fox despite only knowing him for a few hours, and he also wanted to repay him for saving his life earlier.
- The dance battle in the Siberian tavern serves as a moving moment for Tails and Sonic bonding. Sonic is quick to ask Tails if he's okay when the latter starts hyperventilating and when Sonic switches the music to "Uptown Funk" he takes Tails' hand and reassures him he'll be fine. Cue them busting out their best moves and winning the dance battle.
- Afterwards, as the two of them are winding down, Sonic refers to Tails as his pal. When Tails asks him if he really means it, Sonic earnestly confirms it. Tails then warmly hugs him.
- Right after that, the two buddies have an absolutely adorable sleep moment. Sonic drapes a blanket over the fox when he falls asleep in front of the fireplace before lying down next to him. Tails in turn drapes his bushy tails over Sonic.
- He is a determined and brave young fox who is willing to face the unknown on multiple worlds and deadly villains, all in an attempt to find Sonic, no matter what.
- He is also quite logical and intelligent, as seen by how he steadily narrowed his search for Sonic by thinking things through and using what he learned along the way.
- He was once insecure about his extra tail, but after seeing how Sonic uses his weird quality, his super speed, to be a hero, Tails came to believe that his weird quality is not so bad. This is a relatable message as many people may have some sort of disability that makes them get ostracized.
- He carries a huge arsenal of gadgets and weapons in his yellow backpack, including a holographic projector and a laser gun. Maddie and Rachel even use some of his gadgets to rescue him, Sonic, and Tom from being held captive by G.U.N.
- Compared to his recent incarnations, Tails is now just as capable as Sonic and Knuckles when it comes to fighting Dr. Robotnik's badniks, and is able to fly the Tornado expertly through a barrage of missiles. He keeps up with them incredibly well despite being both younger and smaller than them.
- Colleen O'Shaughnessey does a wonderful job voicing Tails. She reprises her role from Tails' game counterpart.
- Ryō Hirohashi, Tails' Japanese voice actress since 2003, reprises her role as the voice of Tails, she has been voicing the character since 2003, and she still does a great job voicing him.
- Alicyn Packard also does a great job voicing Tails in Drone Home, it is because Alicyn Packard's vocal cords know how to make a Colleen O'Shaughnessey' Tails impression.
Bad Qualities
- During the snowboarding chase in Siberia, Sonic almost manages to talk down Knuckles by appealing to their Commonality Connection. Unfortunately, before he can truly succeed, Tails launches an electric net at Knuckles, causing the latter to believe Sonic's sincere plea was just a trick to lower his guard.
- To be fair, Tails didn't know that Knuckles was about to have a change of heart.
- Despite having a post-credits scene in the first movie and part of the movie's logo styled after him, Tails doesn't receive the same focus and screen time that Sonic and Knuckles do, and largely serves as a side character for most of the film, with his backstory only being touched on in a couple of scenes, on top of disappearing for a good chunk of the film once he and Sonic arrive in Hawaii.
- In Knuckles, in the episode "The Warrior", he doesn't have too much lines, especially whenever he is on-screen together with Sonic, although this may be excused since most of his dialogue would most likely be what Sonic is saying out and repeating what Sonic is saying.
- While Colleen O'Shaughnessey does reprise her role as the voice of Tails, it will most likely come across as completely hypocritical that Colleen O'Shaughnessey reprised her role as the voice of Tails, but not any of the other voice actors.
Trivia
- Tails is currently the only character to share his same voice actress as his game counterpart.
- If Charmy Bee were to appear in the film series, then it's possible that Colleen O'Shaughnessey would reprise her role as the voice of Charmy Bee.
