Hubie is the main protagonist of Don Bluth's eighth film The Pebble and the Penguin. He's an young Adélie Penguin with red winter hat and yellow scarf around his neck. He is in love with Marina and tries to find the perfect pebble for her. He also faces against his rival Drake, who also wants to be Marina's mate. With the help of a rockhopper named Rocko, Hubie travels to return to Antarctica and marries Marina.
He is voiced by Martin Short, who also voices Stefano in Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and B.E.N. in Treasure Planet.
Why He Looks Like He's Got us a Friend
- First and foremost, he is a marginal improvement of Don Bluth's previous protagonist due to the following reasons below.
- He went through immense character development. He turns from being shy and weak to an assertive penguin.
- His character design is very cute to look at.
- His friendship with Rocko is very charismatic and entertaining. Even their own voice actors (Martin Short and James Belushi) have very good chemistry.
- When Rocko goes off to deal with the Killer Whales that were attacking them, Hubie calls out to Rocko in concern, showing that he truly cares for his friend and felt heartbroken when he thought Rocko died from the killer whales.
- Unlike Drake, he has a very loving relationship with Marina and loves her for who she is.
- Despite being shy, he is not afraid to stand up to bullies, even Drake. When the latter threatened Hubie to give him the pebble that was supposed to be for Marina, he refuses.
- On top of that, he even calls Drake a big bully, which is indeed true considering how he (Drake) bullies him throughout the course of the film.
- He is very good at martial arts; as he used hand to hand combat to fight Drake in the climax of the film.
- His voice actor, Martin Short, did an incredible job voicing him.
- He is aware of his own actions.
- He apologized to Rocko for lying to him about a make believe penguin named Waldo.
- When he realized Rocko was feeling annoyed as he blabbed on about his pebble and Marina, he stops and apologized to Rocko.
"You Dumb Penguin Nerd!" Qualities
- He lied to Rocko about a make believe flying penguin named Waldo, though this action is justifiable as he needed Rocko's help to get him back to Antarctica and he does apologize for doing so anyway.
- As previously mentioned in WHR#10, he can be a bit annoying at times.
- He acts like a butt monkey, but to be fair, Drake bullies him throughout the course of the film, so he is not entirely at fault.
- His design is humanized for a penguin like him, including having fingers and teeth, none of which real life penguins possess.
Trivia
- Before Martin Short was cast, John Leguizamo was considered to voice Hubie.
- Jim Cummings and Matt L. Jones were both considered to be the current voice of Hubie.
