Homura Akemi (暁美 ほむら Akemi Homura) is the main deutagonist in the thriller anime, Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the main protagonist of its sequel, Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion.

    Why She Rocks

    1. She is known to be one of the most tragic characters in the anime.
    2. Homura, despite being portrayed as unfriendly, is actually quite the opposite. She first met Madoka Kaname when she got trapped in a barrier, in a previous timeline.
    3. She is very skilled in combat, using guns, an RPG, and many various weapons.
    4. She has time powers.
      • Not only is she able to stop time, but she is also a time traveler.
    5. Her resolution is to continue fighting as a magical girl, no matter what sin she must commit to do so, only to protect Madoka. To the point where she can't bear being separated from her.
    6. Her fight with Mami Tomoe is intense!
    7. Her demon design is awesome.
    8. Her development throughout the series made her the most compelling character in Puella Magi Madoka Magica:
      • Homura wasn't portrayed as an ordinary or stereotypical edgy character who acted antagonistic towards the protagonist, her past and experiences made her a fully fleshed-out character who suffered from previous timelines.
      • She became a magical girl in order to protect Madoka.
      • Homura had to use time travel to save her friends, only for them to die in one of the worst ways possible in a similar outcome. Including Madoka.
      • She was the first person to learn about Kyuubey's plans, so Homura had to keep Madoka away from Kyuubey to prevent him from turning Madoka into a magical girl.
      • She will do anything to keep Madoka safe and happy, even if it means risking her own life.
        • Even after Madoka remade the world, Homura still remembers her, and kept the ribbons in memory.
      • In the Rebellion film, her attempt of shooting herself in the head and her transformation into a witch shows how much she's had enough of Kyuubey's manipulations.
      • Homura admitted that she was motivated by *love*. (She literally admitted that she loved Madoka!)
    9. Even if you didn't agree with Homura's decisions by the end of Rebellion, you can understand how much pain she had to go through in order to achieve happiness for not only Madoka, but for her other teammates.
    10. Her line; "Being too trustworthy can lead to a greater tragedy." made sense.

    Bad Qualities

    1. The way she took Madoka's powers and becoming a demon at the end of Rebellion divided her fanbase in two. One side thought she did this just for Madoka, while the other side thought she only did this for her own selfish reasons.
    2. Out of all the magical girls in the anime, her magical girl design can be the least interesting.

    • Her voice actress, Chiwa Saito supports HomuMado (Homura x Madoka).
      • Speaking of Chiwa Saito, she had also played Metis from Persona 3 FES, and Jean from Genshin Impact.
    • Japanese fans refer to her as "HomuHomu," as one of the runes in Episode 3 translates to this.
    • In the Magia Record NA community, Homura with her glasses and braids is often referred to as "Moemura," while Homura without her glasses is referred to as "Coolmura".
    • Her birthday is on July 3rd.
    • Homura's surname Akemi means "Bright" (ake) and "Mindset" (mi). It can also mean "dawn beauty".
