Gex is the titular protagonist of the Eidos video game franchise of the same name. He was voiced by Dana Gould.
Why It's Always Tail Time
- He is a really funny video game character who spouts dated pop culture references or mentions of celebrities depending on which channel or level he is in. Examples include “This is like a luau at Mel Blanc’s house”, “This is what Tim Burton thinks about when he's in the tub” and “I haven't seen blasts like this since taco night at James Earl Jones’ house.”
- Dana Gould did a great job voicing him. He even wrote his own dialogue in all three games.
- For UK and Australian ports, Gex has a different voice actor with more localized pop culture mentioned.
- He looks cute and easy to design.
- He was a playable and unlockable guest character in the 2001 Xbox game Mad Dash Racing due to Eidos also making that game.
- His chemistry with Agent Xtra in the third game is good and funny.
- Gex is able to defeat his archenemy Rez in all three games by whacking him with his tail.
Bad Qualities
- His pop culture references and celebrity mentions can be repetitive, though it can be justified that he is a television addict.
- He is somewhat obscure due to Eidos not making a fourth Gex game.
- In the N64 ports of the two sequels, Gex has less voice lines due to space.
- His relationship with Agent Xtra is considered bestiality.
- He speaks with an exaggerated Chinese accent while quoting martial arts movies.
Trivia
- YouTubers Scott the Woz and especially Dunkey made him into an internet meme where his dialogue is made from either pop culture references or “This looks like a [event] at [celebrity]’s house.” Because of that, many people consider his dialogue to be very similar to Family Guy cutaway gags.
- Instead of Dana Gould reprising his role in Mad Dash Racing, Charles Martinet voiced him.
- A Gex 4 prototype known as Gex Jr. was leaked in 2022.
