Media of origin: The Quintessential Quintuplets

Fuutarou Uesugi is the main protagonist of The Quintessential Quintuplets series. He is a serious and hardworking high school student, and a prodigy at the top of his grade. Due to financial reasons, he is tasked to tutor the Nakano quintuplets.

    Good Qualities

    1. His characterization is unlike any other harem MCs. He isn't defined by one trait, not the generic "nice/kind" character, nor is he a big pervert that somehow attracts every girl in the area.
    2. He has a clear personality, principles he follows, quirks to him and his own conflicts he deals with over the series.
    3. He is straightforward, tactless, brutally honest and rude; but is actually capable of holding back his emotions.
    4. He qualifies as a "chick magnet" with respect to the quintuplets themselves, all of whom are very fond of him, and most of whom are outright in love with him.
    5. He shows a sense of duty strong enough to help the quintuplets in their studies despite them not paying him immediately, even though the money that came with tutoring was the initial reason he accepted the job.
    6. He also begins valuing their relationship to the point where he would do things outside of their tutor-student relationship which would later on bloom into a bond where they mutually support each other with little question.
    7. While he is oblivious about love and romance, he's not completely dense, as he reveals to Yotsuba in Chapter 81 that he was actually aware of Miku's feelings all along, and had been for quite some time. Not to mention he's aware of the fact that least a couple of the quintuplets are romantically interested in him, but he largely pushes that aside for a number of reasons.
      • This is how he knew that it wasn't actually Miku who told him that Ichika was in love with him in Chapter 74, but was Ichika in disguise.
    8. He rightfully called out Ichika for her devious actions and when she tries to tell him that she is the girl who he met in Kyoto, he doesn't believe her and outright tells her that he can no longer trust her due to her previous deception.
    9. Character development: As the story progresses, he gradually develops more and more social awareness and becomes more perceptive of other people. He later gains two male friends, Maeda and Takeda, and spends time at the beach with his classmates, without the quints. Takeda even points out how much Fuutarou has changed, and implies that it is due to the quints.
      • He also begins to gain more interest when it comes to love, especially after Nino's confession. While he doesn't understand a whole lot about the concept of love, he understands the weight of it as he begins to fully realize his own feelings.
    10. During the School Festival Arc, he ends up choosing Yotsuba, revealed that he loves her and despite her efforts to run away from a future with him, she finally confessed her long-hidden love for him, much to his shock. After coming to terms that she can pursue her own happiness, she accepts both Fuutarou's re-confession and proposal and they become a couple.

    Bad Qualities

    1. He can be blunt and has a harsh way of interacting, due to him having no friends, to the point that he coldly turns away Itsuki's help with her homework at the start of the series, before realizing she was one of the five girls he was hired to tutor.
    2. He occasionally gets antagonized by Niko, as she viewed him as an interloper to the sisters' unique relationship and has gone to extreme, sometimes illegal lengths to ban him from their apartment, like drugging him.
    3. Despite his usual seriousness, he can get worked up easily when dealing with the quintuplets, and also had a habit of boasting obnoxiously about his grades to the annoyance of the girls.
    4. Some fans did not like that Fuutarou chose and married Yotsuba, instead of any of the more popular girls like Nino or Miku and how Yotsuba had very little romantic buildup with Fuutarou compared to the others, apart from Itsuki.
