Frederick Charles "Freddy" Krueger, otherwise known as Freddy Krueger, is a character and the main antagonist from the A Nightmare on Elm Street film series. He first appeared in Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) as a burnt serial killer who uses a gloved hand with razors to kill his victims in their dreams. He is portrayed by Robert Englund.
Why He Haunts You in Your Dreams
- Even though he's the villain, he's actually quite likable and steals the show throughout the franchise.
- Unlike Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers, who are both depicted as completely serious horror movie serial killers, Freddy has a dark and twisted sense of humor when it comes to killing his victims, much like IT.
- Speaking of Jason Voorhees, he fought him in the 2003 crossover slasher film Freddy vs Jason, but sadly Freddy Krueger was defeated by the hockey mask-wearing and machete-wielding Jason Voorhees.
- Robert Englund gives an amazing, unforgettable performance for someone like Freddy.
- In the 2010 reboot, Jackie Earle Haley gave a solid performance as well, even if the character was slightly flanderized in the said remake.
- He's got many tricks up his sleeve, especially when it comes to invading his victims' dreams.
- His design is very creepy in the right way, which makes him quite threatening and menacing.
- He has become one of the most unforgettable, iconic horror movie villains in cinema history.
- The idea of a child murderer who kills people in their dreams is pretty original.
- He has many unforgettable lines of dialogue.
- No matter how badly his plans fail, he never gives up, which is entertaining and scary at the same time.
- His iconic theme song is eerie and sinister, while still somewhat catchy.
Bad Qualities
- While his appearance in the first movie managed to balance horror and comedy together, the sequels delved more and more into straight-up comedy, making him a little too humorous or comedic even though he is always depicted as a threat.
- He was slightly flanderized in the 2010 remake where he becomes a full-on pedophile who molests children in his original human years. He also annoys the audience by being overtly sexual, especially toward Nancy. He also isn't as funny as he was in the original and whenever he cracks up a joke, it ends up being very dull. That being said, he's still a cool villain. However, the 1984 film originally had Freddy as a pedophile.
- Speaking of the remake, his design in the remake is pretty ugly and too creepy compared to the original.
- Another factor adding on to this is that it isn't even in character for Freddy no matter how sexual he could get.
