E.T. is the titular character in the cinematic Steven Spielberg-directed classic, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Why He Rules
- His famous catchphrase, known around the world for being memorable butchered, short, and sweet: "E.T. phone home!"
- For an alien from beyond the stars, he is (thankfully) quite friendly, sweet, loyal, and lovable.
- He manages to build a wind-operated emergency beacon, transmitting in his own language, out of common household items (and a Speak and Spell). What's more, his ship hears his transmission and comes back for him!
- His iconic friendship with the young human boy named Elliot, touching the hearts of millions across the world and defining the trope of 'a boy and his creature' we all know today.
- Sound design. Along with the help of numerous talented sound designers and mixers, longtime chain-smoker Pat Welsh did a phenomenal job giving E.T his famous voice.
- His quickly-developed loved for the Earth candy, Reese's Pieces is weirdly compelling and adorable.
Bad Qualities
- Due to some people's delicate sensibilities, E.T's ugly-adorable design can be seen as horrifying and revolting to some, especially to children.
- His tie-in game for the Atari 2600 managed to be considered one of the worst video games of all time, and one of the events that led to The Great Video Game Crash of 1983.
Trivia
- Steven Spielberg states that E.T.'s species is plantlike in their anatomy and are asexual.
- According to the novelization of the film, he's over 10 million years old.
- Other sources put him at about 800 years old, and he's shown to be a child in the book, E.T: The Book of the Green Planet.
