Dr. Otto Gunther Octavius, later called Doctor Octopus, also known as Doc Ock, is the main antagonist of the 2004 superhero film Spider-Man 2, the second installment of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. He also serves as a major character in the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Why the Power of the Sun Is in the Palm of his Hand

1. He is one of the most iconic villains in superhero movie history, rivaling the popularity of Joker from The Dark Knight, Green Goblin from the first Spider-Man movie, Thanos from the MCU and many others.
2. While he is a villain, his actions are extremely relatable, as he just wanted to try and rebuild his machine after it failed the first time, and so he could get revenge on Spidey for him supposedly killing his wife Rosie.
3. He has tons of funny and memorable lines, including, but not limited to:
   • Butterfingers.
   • Ah Rosie, I love this boy.
   • You're getting on my nerves.
   • You have a train to catch.
   • The power of the sun, in the palm of my hand.
   • Brilliant, but lazy.
   • I will not die a monster!
   • Hello Peter.
   • What have you done with my machine?
   • You think your fancy new suit's gonna save you?
   • Looks like we got competition.
   • You're not Peter Parker.
   • You don't listen to him. You listen to me.
   • Peter, You're all grown up. How are you? (Peter: Trying to do better.)
4. Alfred Molina does an excellent job at playing him.
5. Before he turned evil, he was a likable scientist and a genuinely good guy with a heart of gold, with him having a great relationship with Peter, Harry Osborn, and his wife Rosie.
6. His origin of how he became a supervillain is extremely tragic, as he was just trying to make an artificial sun, however that experiment failed, and during the process, his wife was killed, his arms were now permanently attached to his back and the inhibitor chip designed to protect his mind from the tentacles taking over has gotten destroyed, causing him to become evil under the control of the tentacles.
7. Even though he's still a villain, he still shows signs of him having a heart of gold, as he doesn't try to kill people (apart from Spidey) and just takes them hostage, and he politely asks Harry Osborn where he can find Spider-Man and gives him a glass of water.
8. His design is incredibly well done, ditching his bowl cut and green and yellow outfit from the comics in favor of more wavy hair and a Matrix inspired outfit (his comic book design wouldn't look great in live action), while still retaining his signature tentacles and sinister look from the Marvel comics. Heck, in fact, many fans consider his design in the movies better than the one in the comics.
9. While he isn't as strong as say, Green Goblin or Venom, he is still shown to be rather powerful thanks to his tentacles, such as the scene where his tentacles killed all the doctors and nurses in the hospital room and when he was able to rip open a bank vault and capture Aunt May.
10. While he is rather evil, he doesn't really kill people (apart from the doctors and nurses in the hospital scene, though that was mostly his tentacles), as he usually just holds them hostage, like what he did with MJ, Spidey and Aunt May and even threaten to throw Harry off his roof unless he gave him the tritium.
11. His death and redemption was extremely tragic, as he saw that his rebuilt machine was causing chaos in NYC and saw that what he was doing was wrong, so he sacrificed himself to destroy his rebuilt machine and save NYC and all it's people.
12. He is a playable character in the video game Spider-Manː Friend or Foe, and he is really fun to play as in that game.
13. All of his action figures are pretty great, thanks to the his 4 tentacles on his back which allow him to get into some cool poses.
14. His reappearance in No Way Home was incredibly awesome, and a nice surprise when the trailer launched, as he hasn't been seen in the movies since 2004, as he died. His line "Hello Peter" has become one of Doc Ock's most iconic lines
15. His fight with the MCU's Peter was amazing as he gives him a good fight by forcing Peter to focus his efforts on rescuing civilians as opposed to actually focusing on fighting Doc Ock.
16. His interactions with the other villains were great, especially when he reunites with Norman Osborn.
17. In No Way Home, he was later redeemed, as MCU's Peter made a new inhibitor chip, and it surprisingly worked.
18. He pretended to be evil during the final battle in No Way Home, but it turned out to be a trick just so he could get Electro's Arc Reactor, and give him the cure for him.
19. His relationship with Tobey's Peter is really good, as once he took off his mask, Otto instantly recognized him and he expressed how glad he is to see his Peter again and commented that he had grown up since the time they had last met. When he asked how the latter had been, Peter responded that he was trying to do better, the same thing he said when they first met in Spider-Man 2.
20. He, along with Green Goblin, helped pave the way towards more sympathetic and relatable villains in superhero movies, especially Marvel ones, such as Loki, Thanos, Erik Killmonger and Wenwu.

Bad Qualities

1. In one scene in Spider-Man 2, he steals money to build his machine again, but if he's a criminal now then he should have just saved time and stolen the parts themselves.
2. In No Way Home, instead of helping MCU's Peter fight off the other 4 villains, he mostly ran away like a coward, though it could be understandable as he probably didn't want to get involved. To be fair, he was knocked out of the building by Electro and couldn't help because of it.
