Dr. Ivo Robotnik, also known as Eggman, is the main antagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog film series produced by Paramount Pictures and its spin-offs.
He is a brilliant yet comically unstable roboticist who planned to take Sonic's powers for himself in order to conquer the world and later use the Master Emerald to enslave all of existence. Henceforth, he becomes Sonic the Hedgehog's arch-nemesis, just like in every other adaptation of the franchise. He is an orphan, and he has a grandfather named Professor Gerald Robotnik. He is portrayed by Jim Carrey, and he is dubbed by Kōichi Yamadera in Japanese.
Why Machines are Everything to Him
- He is an eccentric but intelligent orphan scientist who comes from a history of bullying and has no value for human life other than his own, being a well-written and flamboyant villain all the way through.
- Robotnik's design are well made, as he looks much more dashing than in the games, as he's in better shape, has a full head of hair, and his mustache is well-groomed.
- In the first movie, he is wearing an almost completely black outfit, though he later changes into a red flightsuit that makes him look more like his game counterpart.
- In the second movie, his design is far more faithful to his video-game counterpart. He now has the red suit along with the black outlines and is bald like in the games. His mustache is also well-designed to fit the games as well. The suit seen in the sequel also has a unique design.
- This version of the character is a bit similar to the Western lore of him of the 1990s (see more below) since he has unique attire and still keeps his signature clothing colors seen on any of his other depictions, such as red, black and yellow or gold (on the triangular buttons).
- His signature suction goggles have a really unique design, and he gives himself a great nerdy-like appearance like in the games when he covers his eyes with them.
- It's also been reported by several sites that he will wear a fat suit in the third movie which Carrey wanted to do ever since the first film.
- It is cool that they brought back the name ''Robotnik'' which is his real name originating from classic American Sonic media, and was rarely used afterwards since Sonic Adventure 2 oftentimes calling him ''Eggman'' worldwide.
- He has a genius intellect, boasting 5 PhDs and an IQ of 300. Growing up, he was a child prodigy, apparently being able to articulate formulas around the time Tom was an infant.
- He is a very gifted world-class engineer and inventor, being the proud creator of a line of revolutionary robotic drones, the Badniks, which he controls with his remote control glove. This also makes him a very unique human.
- He prides himself on his intellect and refuses to acknowledge surprise, instead falling back on the excuse that his movements of surprise do not count since he is "expecting not to expect something."
- He is also characterized by his eccentric behavior. This includes sudden mood swings, mimicking robotic noises and movements, using large and complicated words in conversations to describe a simple situation, and dancing wildly to his own scenarios when he believes he is alone.
- He's a government agent employed to track down Sonic and take the secrets of his powers, which he does with extreme prejudice, although only to exploit that power for himself. Even Robotnik's nominal allies in the United States government would rather have nothing to do with him because of his reputation as a mad scientist, but he's the only one who can conceivably catch Sonic.
- He continues this role in the sequel, with Robotnik being much more open with his villainy and seeking the Master Emerald to use its power to take over the world.
- All of the battle scenes and fights with Robotnik against Sonic are pure awesome and fun to watch, and most viewers and audiences find them awesome.
- He is shown to tolerate Agent Stone, whom he compliments for his lattes, albeit very aggressively. When he's not being aggressive, Robotnik seems to genuinely care about Stone, as although he abused him in the first movie, he admits that he missed him when they reunited in the second movie and even takes him along into the Death Egg Robot.
- While he did use him for his own gain, it was nice to see Robotnik team up with Knuckles, as they form an alliance in mutual pursuit, to get rid of Sonic and finding the Master Emerald.
- After Robotnik gains the power of the Master Emerald for himself, he glows an eerie green color and his voice takes on an otherworldly echo. Freaky, but a cool testament to his newfound power.
- He makes a Death Egg Robot, which is a hundred times bigger than its game counterpart, on top of having additional capabilities to summon more badniks and shoot missiles and lasers, and a movable moustache for smashing. He's clearly learned from his first loss.
- Like Thanos in Endgame, Robotnik's defeat in the second movie isn't a typical villain dialogue, no fearful screaming or useless pinwheeling, no begging for his life. He just smirks, holds his arms out, and casually gives his foe a mocking farewell. Respect.
- In a universe that is filled with superpowered anthropomorphic animals, Dr. Robotnik is still the greatest threat, based solely on his genius alone.
- Jim Carrey gives an excellent and perfect performance as he puts his famous charisma into Robotnik, channeling his iconic 1990s film roles and stealing the show. Jim Carrey is clearly having the time of his life bringing Robotnik to the big screen, combining his penchant for loud and manic characters with the already bombastic nature of the source character.
- It can also be considered that the same wouldn't be as good without him. The producers also confirmed that he will never be replaced by another actor no matter what.
- He seemingly partially references his dark circled eyes seen on his AoStH counterpart, when he gained visibly sunken eyes on the Mushroom Planet, giving him somewhat of a menacing look.
- And thanks to Mr. Carrey's acting, he referenced his AoStH portrayal's R rolling in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 where he is playing chess at the beginning, and second where he reunites with Agent Stone.
- Fun fact, he sounds identical to Mike Pollock's voice of the doctor when he shouts ''WHAT'S THE MATTER OF YOU!?'' at the ending.
- His lean and slick appearance looks a bit like his Sonic the Comic counterpart's Ovi Kintobor form.
Bad Qualities
- He regularly abuses Agent Stone, all the way up to punching him in the stomach for no reason. He also considered him a dumb "know-nothing", even if admitting he's smarter than most humans.
- He has a massive ego and a hatred for humanity, believing them to be inferior to his him and his machines.
- In fact, he even wants to ruin Tom's life in addition to capturing Sonic because Tom punched him in the face.
- Just like what his game counterpart did, he used Knuckles for his own gain. After he tells him that he had served his purpose, he further taunts him by saying he was foolish for being willing to trust him and thinking they were friends.
Trivia
- This incarnation of Dr. Robotnik has spawned some internet memes from his dialogue (alongside with his AoStH counterpart), such as "I was not expecting that, but I was expecting not to expect something so it doesn't count." and "OH!!! GIVE ME A BIG FAT BREAK!!".
- While Robotnik's nationality in the games is a mystery (despite supposedly being caucasian), this one comes from the United States.
- In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, when Agent Stone is picking out Dr. Eggman's outfits, one of his outfits is Eggman's game suit.
- An early concept art for the sequel depicts him in a jacket based off his modern games design.
- The joke of Dr. Robotnik flossing in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is an attempt to be hip with the kids, especially with how flossing was outdated by 2022, and flossing was most iconic by 2018. This is meant to show how out-of-touch Robotnik was by the time he returned to Earth after being on the Mushroom Planet in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
