Denji (デンジ, Denji) is the main protagonist of Chainsaw Man. As a young boy, he inherits his father's debts from the Yakuza. After meeting Pochita, he becomes a Devil Hunter for the Yakuza in an attempt to clear his debt. Once the Yakuza, under the control of a Devil, betray him, he dies and Pochita becomes his heart. He now becomes the Chainsaw Devil by pulling a cord on his chest. After meeting Makima, he became a Public Safety Devil Hunter.

    Why He's the Chainsaw Man

    1. He's shown to be a pretty sympathetic character as his father was an abusive alcoholic who attempted to kill him in a drunken rage and he simply never had a chance to develop a proper, healthy understanding of emotions.
    2. Aside from having a lack of intellect or social skills, he's shown to have a positive influence on others:
      • Both Aki and Power are changed for the better and the two that originally started off fairly selfish end their respective journeys having learned to love Denji and become willing to sacrifice themselves for his and others' happiness.
      • Pochita was dreaded among Devils for his abilities and methods of dealing with dangerous threats but is heavily implied to have Took a Level in Kindness and willing to protect rather than kill thanks to living happily with Denji.
      • Hanging out with Denji gave Reze enough courage to make a try for abandoning her mission and life as the Bomb Devil just to be with him.
      • After Makima is reincarnated into Nayuta with all of her previous personality wiped, Denji is entrusted with raising her so she doesn't become another monster like Makima. With his track record, it's very likely Nayuta will grow up having the friends and family Makima had yearned for. And he does love her.
    3. After his lowest point in Chapter 92 his realization that the world at large loves the Chainsaw Man, coupled with Kobeni telling him that a troubled life is normal, gives him the drive to keep on dreaming and living.
    4. Character development: He went from being a manic, hedonistic horndog to a tired but experienced "Knight in Sour Armor". His desire for a normal life leads to many hardships and losses, but in the end, he comes to accept that it's just how the world is and the best he can do is to keep dreaming and to show kindness where it was previously absent to make life just a little bit better.
    5. He doesn't want to hurt innocent people if he can help it, for example, he preferred to retreat when Santa Claus's Dolls are given back a small amount of their humanity to freak him out.
    6. Memorable quotes such as:
      • "I became a Devil Hunter on a whim, but if I can keep livin' this kinda life, then I don't mind dyin'."
      • "I wanna touch some boobs..."
    7. Despite him being perverted at times, but instead of being perverted for the sake of it, he wants to understand what sex is and how it's like. That is until he found out about Makima's true nature.

    The Only Bad Quality

    1. Before Denji was forced to kill Aki after he was possessed by the Gun Devil, he lacks both social skills and emotions, for example, he didn't cry at Himeno's death.
