Death (also known as Wolf, Lobo, Muerte) is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Big Jack Horner) of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. He is a tall, grey wolf. He is a menacing archenemy of the legendary Puss in Boots. Death is voiced by Wagner Moura.
Why He's Death, Straight Up
- He is one of the most memorable characters in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, along with Jack Horner, and one of DreamWorks Animation's most intimidating antagonists after Lord Shen from Kung Fu Panda 2.
- His whistle is very iconic, it reminded Puss in Boots that his last life is over.
- Since his first encounter with Puss, he continues to quietly stalk him from the darkness and is able to send him into a state of utter panic and terror just by whistling and staring at him ominously with his glowing black and red eyes and murderous smile.
- Wagner Moura did a great job voicing him.
- He may not have a lot of screen time, but whenever he appears, he steals the spotlight from every moment of it.
- He gained a newfound respect for Puss in Boots after their final fight.
- He makes it clear that he's only after Puss, not once threatening his companions and leaving everyone else out of their confrontation at the Wishing Star.
- While he visibly enjoys terrifying Puss throughout his appearances, he seems to enjoy a good fight just as much. After disarming Puss, he tells him to pick up his sword, and later returns it to him, daring him to stand his ground and fight him for the last life.
- He is one of few antagonists not to be defeated in battle, since he is Death himself and cannot be stopped. Even when Puss disarms and knocks him down, he admits he has no chance to actually defeat him. Once he sees that he no longer fears him and learns to value his life, he begrudgingly allows him to live, but remarks that they will meet again to which Puss acknowledges.
- His design is badass.
- Even if you ignore the fact that he's the Grim Reaper, Death possesses the skills of a vicious bounty hunter, most similarly to Kenny Ackerman from Attack on Titan.
- He has a lot of great quotes:
- "Everyone thinks they'll be the one to defeat me. But no one's escaped me yet."
- "You're not living up to the legend... gato."
- "I just love the smell of fear."
- "What's the matter? Lives flashing before your eyes?"
- "Pick it up. Pick. It. Up!"
- "And I don't mean it metaphorically, or rhetorically, or poetically, or theoretically or in any other fancy way. I'm Death, straight up. And I've come for you, Puss in Boots."
- “I find the very idea of nine lives absurd! And you didn’t value any of them.”
- "Go ahead, run for it. Makes it more fun for me."
- "I’ve enjoyed the chase, gato. But I think we’ve reached the end now, you and I. You're gonna take the coward's way out? Run away to more lives!? Or you're gonna fight?"
- "This is gonna be fun."
The Only Bad Quality
- As mentioned in GQ #5, he doesn't have that much screen time, with a total of 8 minutes.
