These characters rock, but it's also because of how their portrayals vary by adaptation and how diverse the characters' personalities were depicted in spin-offs that aren't canon like shows, cartoons, movies, comics, etc, all of which are typically separate versions from the original character by canon (although there are exceptions where their characterization perfectly blends into the original source material).
Making them have different and original personalities that differ from the original character's portrayals, which works in the setting these characters were set in; three examples of this to list include the many counterparts of Dr. Robotnik/Eggman (i.e his AOSTH version), the Joker (his TV 1966 version), and King K. Rool (his 1995-6 CGI TV counterpart).
