Calvin (Calvin & Hobbes)

NOTE: Characters that are already in LCW are not allowed here, but this is one of the few exceptions, due to Calvin being a very divisive character.

Calvin, named after theologian John Calvin, is the main titular protagonist of Calvin and Hobbes. He is highly intelligent, though without any self-discipline or concentration, a six-year-old boy with a vivid imagination and a habit of getting into trouble and adventure. The comic centers around Calvin's life, his troubles, and his adventures, with Hobbes alongside as his companion.

Calvin is characterized by his imagination, philosophy, extensive vocabulary, social awkwardness, and mischievous behavior. Calvin is very cynicala and usually gets annoyed with Hobbes. His first piece of dialogue was the first line of the strip and his last line of dialogue was also the strip's final line.

Calvin and/or his alter egos appeared in almost every strip of the series ever printed and published, however, there are several strips he does not appear in, those being where his parents or other side characters reflect on Calvin or recent events (such as Calvin's home being broken into).

Good Qualities

1. Calvin can be nice most of the time and sometimes has common sense.
   • Despite generally being anti-social, Calvin can be quite loving, for example, in the story arc with the dying raccoon.
2. He can be relatable in some comics.
3. He can also be quite sympathetic at times.
4. Calvin & Hobbes' charm would be non-existent without him.
5. His alter-egos (Stupendous Man, Spaceman Spiff, Tracer Bullet, etc.) always make for a fun story.
6. He's not really a bad character; he's just flawed.
7. He gets his comeuppance plenty of times throughout the comic series.
8. He has a lot of memorable quotes, most notably "Sometimes I think that the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us." and "THAT MEANS YOU'RE SLEEPING ON THE FLOOR NIGHT, YOU NINCOMPOOP!".
9. He does have a point about global pollution being a VERY disgusting and terrible thing.
10. He's an accurate representation of how children his age can act.
11. His character design is good, like everyone else.
12. He does have some well-meaning intentions, such as a time when he flooded the house trying to fix the bathroom faucet.
13. It's implied that due to his overactive imagination, he's not fully aware that his actions are hurting people when he does something wrong, so he likely doesn't mean it when he does bad.
14. He does apologize for his actions sometimes.
15. He's very smart most of the time.

Trivia

• Aside from English, Calvin has briefly spoken German, Latin, and some phrase-book Spanish.
• Calvin sometimes is shown having a watch, but it disappears between panels.
• Calvin is creeped out by somnambulists, or sleepwalkers.
• It's been implied that Calvin is a music fan, considering he and Hobbes dance to it all the time. He takes a liking to classical music, and presumably rock music as well.
• Calvin writes with both hands, but he's commonly shown to be right-handed. During the baseball strips, Calvin noticeably can be seen wearing a glove on a different hand in each panel.
• Calvin appears as a cameo in the sixth issue of the comic book series and both episodes 8 and 9 of the TV cartoon The Maxx.
  • Calvin also appears in several 2013 newspaper strips of Pearls Before Swine.
• In the early developments of the strip, Calvin was going to be named Marvin.
• He is the only character to appear in both the first and last panel of the comics. He shared his first panel with his dad and last panel with Hobbes.
