Bob the Tomato is one of the main characters of VeggieTales. He serves as a host in the series and is involved in introducing many stories for the audience in the beginning and wrap-up the Biblical lesson at the end of most of the shows. He also plays many character roles in the stories as some would be in contrast to his more mature persona. The creator of the show (Phil Vischer) refers to Bob as his inner Mr. Rogers.
Why He Made You Special And He Loves You
- If there's one thing that makes this tomato likable is that he's a kind character that does a good job at interacting with the characters and the audience as he is a character viewers (including kids) can look up to. In fact, he's like a good teacher.
- At the end of the series, there are times when he would wrap-up the show by talking about a lesson that needs to be learned in a non-preachy way. Though fictional, this is how you preach the word of God and Bob is one of the few examples of this. In fact, you might even learn a thing from him or two.
- He often has a running gag that makes Bob get annoyed by the "What We Have Learned" song. Bob also has some comical moments like when characters would often mistake Bob for having a fever or sunburn because of his red color.
- Regardless of what role Bob plays as whether it be the main role, a side role, or whatever role he gets his hands on (oh wait, he does not have any hands), Bob is still the likable tomato that he is and is pretty good at acting on what character he plays as. Some of his roles include Tomato Sawyer, Cavis Appythart, ThingamaBob, Ottar, Rack, Sheriff Bob, Captain Spork, you name it.
- Being a Christian tomato, he's always trying to do what's right and be a good role model. Enough is said.
- Phil Vischer did a great job voicing him.
- Despite Bob being a bit of a control-freak at times, Bob would calm down and make things right with his friends. He's able to be resilient with any issues he's facing and ultimately meet his rather ambitious goals.
- In The VeggieTales Show (the revival series), Bob as well as the rest of the VeggieTales characters have gotten redemption after the failure of the Netflix series VeggieTales in the House. Complete with the personality and design that makes Bob likable.
- While Bob is a nice guy, he's pretty serious as he's one of the characters in the show that is portrayed as a "straight-man". When we mean by serious, not the kind of serious that is a try-hard. This serious trait of him makes him tolerable.
- He has presented great stories that made VeggieTales the show that it is today. Bible story or a completely original story (even the ones that parody mainstream pop-culture), he's got a story to tell that even kids will be ready for.
- Even if Bob has been seen stressed out before, he's always down for teaching and answering the many questions he gets from the show.
Bad Qualities
- He can easily be annoyed.
- When the show goes wrong, Bob starts to act pretty crankily which can make him very high-strung. There have also been times when Bob would clash with his friends who don't always share his specific vision or mindset.
- His redesign in VeggieTales in the House is uncanny to look at. He was also flanderized in the Netflix series as well which makes Bob in this show look stupid.
- His costume design in the German spin-off series VeggieTales FitnessHof is pretty hideous despite staying true to the show he comes from.
Trivia
- Bob was originally going to be named Tommy the Tomato. Phil thought that the name looked too cute as he wanted a regular name.
- According to the first episode of the German spin-off series, VeggieTales FitnessHof, Bob states his grandmother is from Spain.
- In the Qubo series, Bob said he was allergic to shellfish.
